Fourth of July Holiday Closures: What You Need to Know About Banks, Post Offices, and Shipping Services

As Americans gear up to celebrate Independence Day this Thursday, it’s important to note that banks and post offices will be closed for the federal holiday. This means that if you need to mail a package or conduct any banking transactions, it’s best to plan ahead and do so before or after July 4th.

The origins of the Fourth of July date back to when Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a “spontaneous celebration,” as described in a letter by John Adams to his daughter, Abigail. The holiday became a regular occurrence after the War of 1812, and Congress officially made Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

According to USA TODAY, all post offices will be closed for retail transactions on July 4th, and there will be no regular residential or business mail deliveries. However, Priority Mail Express is available 365 days a year, including federal holidays.

In terms of banking, branches of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on the Fourth of July. Capital One Cafes, however, will remain open.

For shipping services, UPS pickup and delivery services will not be available on July 4th, and UPS Store locations may be closed. FedEx’s pickup and delivery services will also be limited on the holiday, so it’s best to check with your local store for specific hours of operation.

As you prepare for your Fourth of July festivities, make sure to plan ahead for any banking, mailing, or shipping needs to avoid any inconvenience on the holiday.
