Study Reveals Economic Impact of 2024 Total Solar Eclipse on Southwest Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV)— The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse brought more than just a stunning celestial event to Southwest Indiana—it also brought a significant economic boost to the region. Explore Evansville has released the results of a comprehensive economic impact study conducted around the eclipse, revealing the positive effects it had on the local economy.

The study, conducted by Rockport Analytics and commissioned by Explore Evansville, focused on the counties of Posey, Gibson, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. It found that during the period of April 5th to April 9th, there was a total of 150,382 visitors in the region. Of these visitors, 40,004 were specifically drawn to the area due to the eclipse, resulting in a total tourism spending lift of $6.6 million.

The direct business impact, or “economic impact,” of the eclipse was calculated to be $4.6 million, reflecting the value added to the regional economy as a result of increased tourism activity. The study utilized a variety of data sources, including geolocation and credit card spend data, lodging statistics, and tax data, to arrive at these figures.
